Discussions concerning culture should not be critical of it in nature- Prof. Namvar
Gorakhpur(April 24th 2006)
One of India’s most well regarded critics, Prof. Namvar Singh, said that it is essential that discussions concerning culture should not be critical of it in nature. Presently, instead of cultural activists, people who display scant awareness of culture seem to be more worried about it. He stressed that in a country like India, culture should never be a singular term. We should refer to cultures, given the variety of ethnic groups in India.
Prof. Singh was in Gorakhpur this Saturday as the Chief Guest for ‘Samvad 2006’, a dialogue session organized by Dainik Jagran and Anamika publications at the Samvad Bhavan of Gorakhpur University. After congratulating Dainik Jagran, he began the dialogue by starting with Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s ‘Sanskriti ke chaar Adhyay’(Four chapters of Culture). He told the session that when he asked Mr. Dinkar why he chose to write only four chapters, the latter replied that writing the fifth one is a task he left to the people of the present times. This fifth chapter is being written in India from 1991 onwards. Referring to globalization, he said that the imperialism we once felt was over has returned in the form of American influence around the globe. Its destructive aspects have been felt in many other nations as well. He said that this influence needs to be addressed when discussing the fifth chapter of our culture. Prof. Singh also made it clear that he adheres to no specific cultural principles. Instead, he felt that culture is a matter of conduct. To make his point he brought into discussion Sardar Puran Singh’s essay ‘Aachran ki Sabhyta’(Culture of conduct). Hinting at the media’s duty and the present situation, he compared media to a beautiful mirror which now only focuses on the ugly aspects of our society. He said that even Hitler’s concentration camps sprang out of a perverted outlook of what culture really is.
Discussing Bhagwat Sharan Upadhyay’s book ‘Itihas ke pannon par khoon ke cheete’(Blood stained pages of history), he sought to inform the public that while ‘writing the fifth chapter’, these ‘blood stains’ can be countered by the fields of music, arts, drama and poetry. He drew parallels between a coin and culture, that both have two aspects to them. Using effective metaphors, he explained how on one side of culture we have ‘blood stains’, while on the other we have those who try to create a society bereft of these stains, cleaning them with their teardrops. He said though India is one civilization, it comprises of many ethnic groups, each with their own culture. Talking about regionalism, he said that even Great Britain has many native cultures, namely the Welsh, English and Scottish. He thus implied that many cultural entities make a country. Also, he felt that culture demands a healthy mind and a healthy society.

Hail Storm and Heavy Rain in Gorakhpur (Report by Sudhanshu): UNTIMELY RAIN followed by hail storm in Gorakhpur and neighbouring areas has proved fatal to the standing wheat and gram crops. Farmers will incur heavy crop and financial loss if the existing weather continued for another few days. According to a noted soil scientist and the Vice-Chancellor of the Chandra Shekhar Azad Agriculture and Technology University (CSA) Dr MM Agarwal, the storm like winds followed by rain have not only destroyed the standing crops, but it has affected the prospects of the crops sowed recently. He apprehended that the three days ‘bad weather’ has caused at least 10 per cent damage to the wheat and the gram crop, as the crops were at the final stage of ripening, but the hail storm damaged most of the plants. An agro-specialist at the Indian Institute of Technology MD Singh apprehended that the mango crop was badly affected due to inclement weather conditions. Most of the mango fruits would be infected by the diseases and would not reach at the ripening stage. These weather conditions would also damage the vegetable crops. Scientists at the CSA unanimously suggested that the farmers should take their damaged crop to storage places. The weather observer at the CSA Dr VS Varma apprehended that if the rain continued for a few days more, it would disturb the next seasonal cycle and the rain would either be delayed or they would be very scanty and untimely.
