
Chauri Chaura : Famous Historical Town
Chauri Chaura is a small town in Gorakhpur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. History students remember this place for its famous Chauri Chaura Incident which took place on 4th of February 1922. It is also known for its Dal and Gud (Pulses and Jaggery) Mandi. There is a big leather market too, known as Chamadahiya Bazaar (Leather Market) to supply hide (Khal or raw leather) to markets as far away as Kanpur and Calcutta.Chauri Chaura witnessed the historical incident during 1922 after which Mahatma Gandhi was shocked and withdrew his year old ASAHAYOGA ANDOLAN (Non Co-operation movement). Several freedom fighters were hanged by the British Government of that period and several others were sentenced to the cellular jail on the Andaman Islands, known as Kala Pani(Black waters). SHAHID AMIN, a professor of history at University of Delhi, who hails from Deoria (15 miles from Chauri Chaura), has written a famous book on Chauri Chaura titled "Event, Metaphor, Memory: Chauri Chaura 1922-1992" published by University of California Press. Chauri Chaura : History
Chauri Chaura is situated in Lat. 26 Degree 38' N. and Long. 83 Degree 35' E. on the State highway between Gorakhpur and Deoria, 26 km. from Gorakhpur. It has a railway station which is 25 km. south-east of the Gorakhpur railway junction. Prior to abolition of zamindari the village was held by Sikh zamindars of Dumri (Gagaha), who established a bazar near the railway station and made the place a local commercial centre of hide trade. Chauri Chaura is 25 kms from Gorakhpur on Gorakhpur-Deoria road. Any bus bound to Barhaj Bazar, Salem Pur, Rudra Pur or Deoria can be taken from Gorakhpur Bus Stand and it takes about 40 minutes to reach Chauri Chaura. There are also several private transport like Jeep and Taxi available from Gorakhpur.
Tarkulaha Devi Temple is one of the major attractions near Chauri Chaura. This Temple is located around 5 kilometers from Chauri Chaura. The temple has been historically associated with the great freedom fighter Shaheed Bandhu Singh. There is also a memorial built to honour Shaheed Bandhu Singh.
This Guru Teg Bahadur Gurudwara is located in Sardar Nagar Town. This town used to be a big industrial town having a sugar factory, a distillary, a steel plant. Noted artist Amrita Shergill was also associated with this place.
